BLOCK & PULL QUOTES: INFO & NOTES

Visual block quotes allow you to emphasize an important quote, break up walls of text, and create a magazine-like aesthetic for your content. You can also use these styles as pull quotes, repeating some of your text content for strategic emphasis.

Ways you can use block quotes in Canvas…

  • Quoting long sections of a text, such as the course textbook or an assigned reading.
  • Creating a pull quote that repeats a key section of the content.
  • Adding context or flavor to a page with a relevant quote.

Notes

  • Mobile - All block quote styles will adjust size and spacing slightly for mobile devices.
  • The red large style has the quotation mark already coded in, so you should not add this to your text.
  • If your quote is more than one paragraph, we recommend the gray small style, since it takes up less space on the page.
  • The hyphen before the quote attribution is purely optional. Feel free to remove it or change it for a different symbol, like a tilde (~).

Always include an attribution if you are quoting a source. If you are creating a pull quote (referencing content already in the text) then you may delete the attribution line after pasting the element into your Canvas content.
