Purpose

Transparent Assignment Design is a framework for creating assignments that make learning clear and explicit for students. The first key component of Transparent Assignment Design is a statement of the purpose of the assignment. Why are you asking students to complete this assignment? How will this benefit their learning? Which course and/or module objectives does this assignment help students achieve? Answering these questions helps students understand the value of the assignment and motivates them to fully engage with the assignment.

How to Complete the Assignment

The second key component of Transparent Assignment Design is the statement of the task. Making your instructions to students clear and easy-to-understand helps them focus on completing the assignment successfully. Lists are a great tool to make instructions easy for learners!

  1. Start by reviewing this assignment prompt in full.
  2. If you have any questions, reach out to me directly or post them in the Q&A discussion board.
  3. A real assignment is likely to have many more steps than this.

Grading Criteria

The final piece of Transparent Assignment Design is clear evaluation criteria. You could provide a rubric here or describe how you will evaluate student work. It may also be worth reiterating your late work policy here.
