Important Tips
How to Approach the Design Library
Start Small, Dream Big
Start by adding one design element to your Canvas content. Section Headings is a great starter option. Then, as you become familiar with how the process works, you can start adding in other elements. Eventually you can overhaul whole pages or your entire course!
Focus on Key Canvas Content
While the steps for adding these design elements are simple, it may be time-intensive to add them to all your Canvas content, especially if you have a lot of content. Instead, focus on key content, such as your home page, module overview pages, or assignments. (Hint: we have templates for all of those that you can adapt!)
Embrace Creativity
While we’ve included different ways to use each item, these designs will come to life in your hands! Feel free to use items in different ways and combine them together. These designs are flexible and can be used however you want to use them.
Don’t Stress, Have Fun
You won’t break your Canvas site. If you make a mistake in adapting these styles, the content will simply revert back to Canvas defaults styles. Experimenting with Canvas should be a fun, stress-free experience!
Practical Tips and Tricks
Copy Your Item Before Editing
Instead of adding these design elements to your content directly, we recommend making a copy of the Page, Quiz, Syllabus, etc. and adding them to the copy. That way, if you run into issues, you can go back to the original and start fresh. If you don’t make a copy, you can always use Version History Links to an external site. to revert to an earlier version.
Read the Info & Notes
The Info & Notes section on each page provide details about the item, including different behaviors and important considerations. Read all of the notes before adding the item to your Canvas content. Return to the notes if you encounter any issues as you go.
