Welcome!

Welcome to CHEM 225 - Chemical Analysis!

This course is intended to teach you how to properly perform quantitative measurements. The skills you would learn are used in many typical analytical procedures in commercial laboratories. In this course, hands-on experience is essential, and we will do our best to give to the maximum possible amount of it.

Our lectures are once a week, Tuesdays 8:00-9:15am, in FB 340 on the 3rd floor of our brand new Foundational Science Building.

Our laboratory room, FB 549, is on the 5th floor of the same building. You do not need to purchase the laboratory manual because the necessary instructions will be posted on Canvas weekly.

What will you need for this course:

Textbook: Analytical Chemistry, 7th Edition, Christian, John Wiley & Sons, 2014. You can go with any format for the textbook – printed or digital, buy or rent – whichever is more convenient for you.

Lab Notebook: Any bound notebook for data recording. All lab reports will be formal in nature and therefore typed.

Personal Equipment:

  • TI-30x series calculator for tests
  • Safety Goggles (not shop goggles); available at campus area bookstores; will need for the first-week lab already.
  • Lab Coat (with long sleeves and covering knees) - available at campus area bookstore; will need for the first-week lab already.  In labs, clothing that COMPLETELY covers the body from the underarms down must be worn. Shoes must also completely cover the foot. No ankles should be exposed. Long hair should be tied back or tucked into your lab coat
  • Combination lock (no key-only entries; to be used on your individual glassware drawer; combination will be given to me).

For liability reasons, stockrooms (or anyone) will not loan goggles or lab coats.

Software installed on your home computer:

Microsoft Excel and Word – see the webpage for download instructions https://www.bsu.edu/about/administrativeoffices/technologystore/students/softwareforstudents Links to an external site..   You will need basic skill of creating a Word document and creating a graph is Excel.

PDF converter - After creating your lab reports and other assignments in Word, you will need to print them to PDF before submitting on Canvas. "Print to Adobe PDF" comes standard in Word. Or you can print out on paper and scan to PDF. You can use various smartphone PDF-maker apps: Notes (on iOS), PDF element (on iOS and Android), Google Drive or CamScanner (on Android), and many others. Whichever method you choose, please submit your work as one file, unless directed otherwise.

Hardware: you can find computer recommendations on this page https://www.bsu.edu/about/administrativeoffices/technology-store/students Links to an external site.. Besides general recommendations, review the recommendations by College of Sciences and Humanities on that page.

Face mask: Optional for all lectures and labs. See full information by navigating to this web page: https://www.bsu.edu/about/administrativeoffices/emergency-preparedness/pandemicfluprep/coronavirus Links to an external site.

If you are directed to quarantine (and you can provide documentation), please contact me right away so I can arrange for alternative assignments for you.

Looking forward to having you in my class on Tuesdays at 8:00 am in FB 340.
