Important:

Chemical splash safety goggles, a lab coat, clothing that covers your legs completely, and flat soled shoes that cover the entire top of the foot must be worn at all times in the lab.

Safety Quiz:

You also must successfully complete (all questions answered correctly) a brief on-line safety quiz AND sign the safety contract before you may participate in any of the wet labs. Both of these items are available electronically via the Canvas site for your lab section.

Course Risks:

Students enrolling in this course will be working with a variety of chemicals, some of which could be irritating or hazardous. Proper and accepted good laboratory practice will always be utilized to minimize or eliminate any adverse contact. However, individuals with sensitive medical conditions (including pregnancy) should take precautions such as wearing additional protective garments, delaying enrollment, or not enrolling in this course. Information about how to obtain Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for chemicals used in this course is available in the chemistry department office, FB 417. Please consult with your instructor and health care professional if you have any concerns.

Grading:

Each lab is worth 25 points: 5 points for the pre-lab and 20 points for the report. Note: Pre-lab questions will be due when you arrive at the lab. Only the ten highest lab scores of the eleven scheduled laboratories will count toward the final lab grade. Three (3) mandatory Review and Problem Solving Sessions (PSS) are scheduled throughout the semester during your regular lab hours. You will receive 25 points per session for your participation. Both the safety quiz and the safety contract are worth 10 points each toward your overall lab grade. You must participate in and pass the lab to pass Chem 112.

Attendance

There will be no make up labs. However, since we will be dropping your lowest lab grade missing one lab should not hurt your grade. If you must miss lab, please contact me as soon as possible.

Supplies:

Chemical splash safety goggles, lab coat, and a calculator (bring to lab).

Teaching Majors:

If you are a teaching major, or if you think you will ever decide to be a teaching major, then you should save the required assignments, exams, and laboratories (also known as artifacts) from this course for a teaching portfolio.
