EXTRA TIME OR ATTEMPTS ON QUIZZES

To provide extra time or attempts on a quiz in Canvas, open up the Quizzes page and select the appropriate quiz.

1: Quizzes in Canvas page navigation, 2: Sample Quiz for Extra Time/Attempts

On the quiz page, select Moderate This Quiz.

On the following page, you can change time or attempts for individual students or in batches. To change an individual student, either select the pencil (Change user extensions) from the student's row or check the student's name and select Change Extensions for 1 Selected Student. To change time or attempts in batches, check multiple students and select the same link.

Change Extensions for 1 Selected Student

This will pull up a dialog box for you to change time or attempts for the student(s). Depending on your quiz settings, you may not see all of the options.

Form fields: Extra Attempts, Extra time on every attempt, Manually unlock the quiz for the next attempt

The checkbox labeled "Manually unlock the quiz for the next attempt" is for any quiz that has been locked due to access dates. If the end date of the quiz availability has passed, check this box to unlock it for the student to complete.

Important Note

If the quiz end time passes while a student is completing the quiz, their quiz attempt will auto-submit and the quiz will be closed, even if the student has extra attempts. To extend a quiz date for an individual student, follow the instructions in the next section.

EXTENDING ASSIGNMENTS OR QUIZZES FOR INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS

In Canvas, you can provide individual students extensions for assignments, quizzes, and discussion boards. To do this, edit the assessment you want to provide an extension for and scroll to the bottom. At the bottom is a block labeled "Assign," which is where you can set different due dates for each student.

Form fields: Assign to, Due, Available from, Until, Add

By default, assessments in Canvas are assigned to everyone with the same due date and availability dates. Select Add, which will add another Assign area below the current one. Then, in the Assign to field, search for the student(s) you want to offer an extension. Change the due date and availability dates accordingly. Note that changing the due date isn't enough if your availability is over: students cannot submit the assessment once it is closed.

Quick Recap

Provide extra time or attempts through Moderate This Quiz. Provide extensions through Assign at the bottom of the assignment creation screen.
